front cover 1st stage of construction

This was the first stage of me constructing my front cover. As you can see its pretty simple at the moment as there is just the magazine title on a white background.

front cover 2nd stage

This was the second stage of construction. All i have done here is put my main image on the page and made the mistake of putting the title over Izels head.

front cover 3rd stage

This was my third stage of construction. I decided that i didnt like the title at this stage so i put a temporary one in until i had decided on my final one. I also put in coverlines and the main story title. I also added an image and barcodes at this point.

front cover 4th stage

Here i have added my pug in the top right hand corner and i also change my title. I also added more stories down the side and added a skyline along the top and bottom.

final stage (5th)

At this point i had changed the title of my magazine to give it a bigger and more recognizable name. I also gave a new main story text image. Here i made the word 'Bounce' bigger and bolder than the other text as it is the most important part. The last thing i added was a small image and a text just below the title of the magazine.

contents 1st stage of constructing my contents page

This was the first stage of creating my contents page. As you can see, there is a mainly white page with a masthead and a skyline. There is also a few lines where the top stories section will later be.

contents 2nd stage

At this point, the contents page was pretty much constructed as i had added images and text to the page. I also added several other lines and related to my colour scheme successfully. I also added another 'splodge' effect below the top stories column to take up some space.

contents 3rd stage

This was the next stage. As i changed the whole masthead to my coursework, it had to be changed here also. I also had to change the masthead on the subscription image at the bottom as it had the old one on it.

Final stage (4th)

This is the final stage to the creation of my contents page. The only thing that has been changed here was minor adjustments to the subscription image in the bottom right corner and the text revealing my competition. I chose to put the important information in a bigger and brighter text, then the other information in a smaller and more slender tone of colour.

1st Stage of constructing my double page spread

This was the start of me making my double page spread. At this stage, all i had done was make the original photo i took the background. I then added in a piece of text which was my title and tilted it to the right hand side. The next step i took was to add two "splodge" effects to bring out the graffiti look of the title. The last step i took her was adding the page numbers in at the bottom left and bottom right of the double page spread.

2nd Stage

At this point, the only difference i made was adding in the main body of text on the right hand page. It consisted of a title, text and an image. At this point, these were the only changes made to my double page spread.

3rd Stage

At this stage in my creation of my contents page, i made quite a few changes. The first being i took away one of the "splodge" effects and put in my magazine title along with a body of text which told the readers about the consistency of the text on the left hand side. I also highlighted some important parts in the text on the right hand page.
I also added in a question and answer which filled the left side of the page around the body of my model. The last change i made here was adding in a pug with a graffiti effect on it. This told readers about the photographs of my model on the next page. This is located by my models left foot.

Final Stage (4th)

The only change i made from the previous change her was the title of the main story (text). I put the word Bounce in apostrophes and made that word larger than the word "reviewed." the reason for this was to draw the readers attention straight to the main story and tried to make it look like it looked on the front page. I made the apostrophes the same colour as my colour scheme too.

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

If we take a look back at my preliminary task, we can see the huge difference in professionalism. The reason that my final piece of coursework looks so much better than my preliminary task (titles 'Secondary Situations') is that i have learnt so much from when i made my preliminary task til when i made my final front cover.
This first major thing i have learnt is that you cant have shadows behind the photos you take for your coursework. This made it very hard for me to cut out with the lassoo tool on photoshop elements. I had to learn how to place the model in a place where no shadow would be casted on the wall behind.
The next thing i have learnt is what music magazine conventions are. These are things such as pugs, cover lines, images, skylines and barcodes. These conventions are all here for specific reasons and i feel i have successfully learnt why they are put on the music magazine.
Also in the run up from my preliminary task to my final media piece, i feel i have learned a lot about photoshop elements software. I have learnt how to use the icons successfully but still needs some practise on this. However, i learnt enough to construct my music magazine coursework.
The last thing i believe i have gained a greater knowledge on is the use of technologies. These are things such as the software, the mac computers, the cameras we used and the blogs we post our coursework on. I didnt use any of the above technologies before this academic year, and now i feel that i can use all of these successfully.
Overall, i feel i have learnt a lot of different things within the space of creating my preliminary task to the construction of my final media parts of coursework.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

There are three main technologies i used during the creation of my media coursework. These were using a camera effectively, using photoshop (mac computers) and blogging. All three of these is didnt know how to use until the start of our AS level year.
Using a camera effectively was hard for me as i am not very good with the Cannon ones we used. These had many buttons and was very tricky to use how i wanted. I understood the camera angles and shadow factors but i couldnt put them into play with the tricky camera. However, after some practise; i got the hang of this piece of technology and took some pretty effective pictures. I believe i learnt how to use this piece of technology well and could definately use it again in the future.
The second piece of technology i used whilst constructing my media coursework was photoshop elements software. I had never used a mac computer before this school year and it was very tricky to understand what the icons meant and what they did. I also had lots of orkwardness when trying to save and copy+paste my work. All of these things were overcome as i got the hang of it pretty quickly. Eventhough i understood some parts of photoshop, i still didnt understand some elements to the software. But during the use of photoshop, i also gained a great knowledge on how to use the Apple Mac computer. I had never used a Mac computed until the start of my media coursework. So i gained a greater knowledge on not only the Apple Mac computers but on the photoshop elements software also.
Before this school year, the word blogging didnt register in my brain. I didnt have a clue what a blog was or how they were used. But as you know, this was the only way to display my coursework on an electrical format. So really, i had to gain an understanding and fast. So as this is what i had to do, i learnt very fast and i think i produced a pretty effective blog considering it was my first time blogging.
I believe i have gained a huge knowledge and learnt so much about the above technologies. I believe i have done considerably well for a first time user and would love the challenge to use them again in the future.

How did you attract/address your audience?

There are 5 main questions i put in my questionnaire purposely to answer this evaluation question. These questions were:
What genre of music do you like?
What color scheme do you think will look best for my magazine?
What draws your attention the most?
How much are you willing to spend on a magazine?
Would a magazine competition convince you to buy a magazine?
So the first way i attracted my audience was by asking them their favourite genre of music. The poll come back with a clear favourite of R&B clearly being the favourite. This was then the genre i created my music magazine around.
The next question i asked was what colour scheme my audience liked best. This came back with a joint two schemes at the top. I then chose the colours of Red, White and Blue as this was one of the joint leaders and made my usic magazine with these colours in mind.
I also asked my audience what two main features attracted them to a music magazine. The results come back as colours and images being the top two. I then created a strong image to go on my front cover along side with a good colour scheme. Images and colour were then created throughout my magazine as this is how i wanted to attract and address my audience.
The next two question were how much are my audience willing to spend on my magazine and would a competition attract them even more. My audience come back saying they would be willing to pay between £2.01 and £3 for my magazine and that they would like a competition to be inside my magazine. So for these two reasons, i priced my magazine at £2.99 and i included a competition to win several i-pods.
The main way i attracted and addressed my audience mas by making the majority of them happy. I managed this by adapting my questions in their favour to give them ultimate satisfaction. So for these reasons, i would like to believe that i have many happy customers for my magazine.

Who would be the audience for your media product?

The audience for my media product takes a look back at my questionnaire results. These results show me the type of people i have set up my magazine to aim at. You can see the description of my results at http://codymcmahonsblog.blogspot.com/2010/03/my-questionnaire-results.html. I created my questionnaire electrically over the net. It was located down the side of my blog so anyone looking at my blog could fill it in.
From my results i could tell that the female audience was going to be my main targets for my coursework. I could also tell that these females would be aged between 16 and 25. So straight away, i have an audience starting to build up.
The next step i took to aiming my media product was the genre of music. My questionnaire revealed that most people enjoyed R&B music. This gives the need to aim it at a multi cultural society due to the number of ethnic backgrounds. So now my audience opens up to a much wider range of teenage females. And this is exactly who i aimed my media product at. It was aimed at teenage girls of all ethnicity who enjoy the genre of R&B.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

After lots of primary research, grazing the internet looking for music magazine distributors; i have found an institution who may distribute my media product. The institution is called IPC Mediaand they are famous for distributing many magazines. However, they only distribute one music magazine which is NME magazine. You can find IPC's website at http://www.ipcmedia.com/.
The reason i think that IPC Media may want to distribute my music magazine is simply because they only distribute one. I believe they may want to increase their business in the music magazine sector. My music magazine closely relates to the NME magazine due to its professional look and its a serious magazine. This is why i think IPC media may want to distribute my music magazine.
However, IPC media ay not want to distribute my product as NME's stories are mostly on english bands and my magazine is a multi cultural magazine with different ethnic backgrounds. But IPC is definately the institution that may want to distribute my media product because of their small business in the music magazine sector.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

My final piece of media coursework was aimed at a multicultural society. Its aimed at pretty much, the teenage girls living in England. So the main social group i was aiming my music magazine was girls between the ages of 16 and 25. As we all know, England today is a very multi cultural country and we do have a wide ethnic range within our society.
The first way in which i represented a multi cultural social group was the use of my main model. Her name is Izel Abdulla and she is a Turkish Cypriot female. She is 16 and lives on the outside of london. I used her because she is of a foreign origin and wanted to represent a multi cultural society. I also used Izel's friend in my music magazine as she is an Italian. This enabled me to put in another race giving it a verisimilitude look to the public of London for example.
Another way i tried to represent particular social was by the top stories within my magazine. It included artists such as Dizzee Rascal (black), Rihanna (mixed race), and Mr Husdon who is white. I done this as it shows a wide range or artists and a wide range of social backgrounds. We have Dizzee Rascal who has an African origin, Rihanna and her Jamaican background and Mr Husdon who is English. These are three origins that you usually see if you go out in public in the United Kingdom. You can see the multi cultural effect with over 4 social groups on my contents page at http://codymcmahonsblog.blogspot.com/2010/04/my-final-contents-page.html.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? (Double page spread)

On my contents page i used some conventions but tried to develop them in my own way. Below i will run through my developed conventions.
My first convention that i developed on my double page spread was my main story title. In all music magazines, the title usually crosses the crease of the page extending over two pages. As you can see on the Q magazines double page, the story of Lily Allen is spread over both of the pages. This is the reason i chose to do this. I also wanted a graffiti affect on the brick wall background, so for these reasons; thats why i used this convention.
The next convention i produced on my double page spread was the use of page numbers. These are used in all magazines are are vital for readers to find the stories inside. There is no real explanation why i used them, just because all magazines do. All magazines also use another convention i have used on my double page spread. This is the use of multiple columns. Most magazines use a minimum of three columns in the main story article. For this reason, i have used three and also put a picture in between the columns which is a music magazine convention. The image has to relate to the main story.
The next convention i produced on my double page spread was the use of my colour scheme. I didnt want to use a white background again, so i come away from my scheme and added the brick wall in behind my model. I still created my colour scheme with my four chosen colours. I was going to try the effect of the Q double page, but i challenged the convention of a plain background and used my own idea.
My model is making strong eye contact with the readers, i tried to produce this convention as Lily Allen does in the Q magazines. I thought this was vital as when the readers flick through, it will catch their attention to the main story. I also used the sexy pose as Lily does to give it more attraction to the readers. So attraction was the main reason i challenged this image convention.
The last convention that i produced on my double page spread was the use of a question and answer. These are very popular in music magazines as the readers want to know what their stars say. I chose to add this in my double page spread to take up space on the left side page and to give it a verisimilitude look to a real music magazine.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? (Contents Page)

This Q magazine contents page was my main inspiration of producing, developing and challenging conventions of a real media product.
The first convention i developed on my contents page was the use of the magazine title in the top left corner. It clearly tells the reader what magazine the contents page is from and by sticking to the colour scheme, makes it look professional. I also decided to use the black skyline bar across the top of my contents page. This clearly states that this page is the contents section and also has the date and issue of the magazine. Again i chose to use this produce a convention used in most music magazines, also to take up some space on my white background.
Another convention i developed on my contents page was the text bar down the left hand side of the page. This is vital in a music magazine as the reader needs to know what pages the stories are on. I chose to add this convention in my contents page as most music magazines have it and i wanted my magazine to be the same.
I have chosen to develop my own main image on the contents page i developed. This will enable my readers to distinguish the main story at one glance. The image also created eye contact with the readers and will convince them to turn to the desired page. I also decided to develop the white strip along the bottom of the main picture. I challenged this aswell by making it the full width of the image and slightly tilting it to the left as i thought it didnt look right when it was straight. But by adding this main image, it left me space below to produce a second box. The Q magazine uses the same kind of format, but in theirs they have a review. Here is where i developed my competition convention and added the i-pod image and the special subscription offer.
The one convention i properly developed on my contents page was the "splodge" graphics above and below the top stories column on the left hand side. I done this for one simple reason, and this was to take up space and cover some of the white background i used.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? (Front Page)

This question is asking me how i used conventional ideason my own music magazine. Conventions are things such as pugs, coverlines, title placing, images and even the placing of the barcode. I am going to explain why i used certain conventions on my coursework and why i may have chose to challenge the convention and not use them.
The first simple convention i produced on my piece of coursework was a pug. As you can see on the Q magazine, the pug is the silver circle advertising readers on a story about John Lennon. I put my pug on my coursework to aware the reader that there are photos of "Izzie" (my model) inside the magazine. I chose to develop this convention because it was easy to create and i had to take up some space as i used a white background.
The next convention i used for my coursework had something to do with my model. If you look at the images above, both of the main characters are making eye contact with the person looking at the magazine. I chose to use this convention as i wanted my main character to make eye contact with anyone who picked up or even looked at my magazine cover. This enable my magazine to have an immediate attraction to any other magazines i may be competing with.
There is a big similarity to my magazine title and the Q magazine title. The reason for this is because i developed the convention for my coursework. The reasons they are both similar are because they are both in the top, left corner. They are also made up of only two colours which makes it look tiday and professional. It also is a third of the page width which makes it the same as the Q magazine title.
On the Q magazine cover, the barcode, date, issue number and price is all neat and tidy in one place. If you look over at my magazine, you can see i also produced this convention by placing my barcode, date, issue number and price all tucked away in the bottom left hand corner. The reasons i decides to develop this convention is because every music magazine in the shops these days have this so that the customer is aware of the price, aware of the issue and date the next issue comes out. It also enables the shop keeper to swipe it through the til when my customers buy my magazine.
The next convention i decided to produce on my piece of coursework was words on either side of my model (coverlines). These are used on music magazine covers to aware readers of what stories are inside. For example on the Q cover, it tells us (the readers) that bands such as Snow Patrol and Vampire Weekend are featuring inside the magazine. Whereas my coverlines are:
Featuring Inside:
Dizzee Rascal
Rihanna
Ne-Yo
And many more!
Interviews With:
Mr Hudson
N-Dubz
I chose to use coverlines to make my readers aware of who and what is going to be featured inside. It is also something that almost every music magazine uses and it takes up space on my front cover as i needed to cover up some white space as it is a gamble using a white backgroung on a front cover.
Another convention i chose to produce on my media coursework was a main story on the front cover. On the Q magazine cover the story is "3 words, Cheryl Cole, ROCKS." Whereas mine is "Izzie's New Single 'Bounce' Reviewed Inside." The main reason i chose to produce this convention on my front cover is that all music magazine covers has a main story and i wanted the same for my front cover.
On the Q magazine cover, ther are 4 colours that create the colour scheme. These are Red, Black, White and Grey. I also produced a colour scheme convention by using Red, White, Black and Blue. By using a minimum amount of colours, it make the front cover look more professional and this is the effect i wanted to give to my readers. I also challenged this convention because if i used more colours, i would have ended up with a messy look for my front cover. This may put readers off and i wanted my magazine to have the professional verisimilitude to other leading music magazines.
The last convention i produced on my front cover was the use of a skyline. This is the bar of text that runs along the very top of the page with writing in it. On the Q magazine cover, there is no outline to the skyline. Its just a bar of text put over the main image without a background. Whereas on my front cover i challenged this convention slightly by putting a background bar behind my skyline. I done this, again to add colour to my cover and also the writing was white and wouldnt have showed up on the front cover.
There is one convention i decided to challenge with my front cover. This is one thing to do with my magazine title. If you take a look at the Q magazine title, the red square the Q is in is over the face of Cheryl Cole. Whereas on my front cover, my title is tucked behind Izzie's head. I chose to do this as i have faith in my magazine and trust my readers to distinguish that it says Chart Busters. This is the only convention i have properly challenged.
There is also a convention i chose to develop on my front cover. This was a competition that run along the skyline along the bottom of my magazine. I decide to add a competition as my questionnaire down the side of my blog revealed that my readers would like a magazine more if there was a change to win something.

Inspirational Photos

These are the photos i wanted to re-create with my model. I wanted the trendy clothing and the sexy poses. I showed these images to my model and made decisions with her on clothing hair make-up ect. I also told her what poses to create as i was taking these pictures and the pictures you can see on my blog are the creation of my decisions. I made these decisions based on the above photos and wanted to create a verisimilitude effect to the likes of Vibe magazine. I also wanted my images to grab the readers attention as i believe the photos above do. this will persuade the reader to look at or even buy my magazine. These pictures also approach my target audience which is 16-25 year olds. These are the type of artists my audience listen to and this is another reason why i want to re-create these pictures. As you can see from the pictures above. I have inspiration going from white people, quarter cast to black. I chose the sort of photos as my magazine is going to be aimed at a multi cultural society. The reason for this is that in modern days, the whole world is becoming multi cultural and i believe this type of magazine will be sold at a wide range.

My Target Audience

This is Naomi Osunde. Shes a 18 year old female of an African origin (Nigerian). She lives in Waltham Cross, on the outskirts of London. Her dress sense has a verisimilitude link to the like of Rihanna ect. She wears clothes from river island and other trendy shops such as high top trainers, hoodies and baggy jeans. She is a very loud and outgoing person who enjoys mainly everything, especially partying. She always has her mp3 player in her ear and is always singing along to it. She watches a range of tv shows including music channels such as kiss, 4music and viva. The reason that she is my target audience is because i am aiming my magazine at a multi cultural society or the London of today.

My Chosen Title

At the start of creating the magazine, i had several titles in mind but again put it to voters to decide. The titles were:

Non Stop Hip Hop
Pluck My Strings
Chart Busters
Soul Sound

There are two reasons why i went on to decide that my magazine was going to be called Chart Busters. These are as followed

The first reason was that the voters liked the genre of RnB over all the other genres i had on my poll.
The next reason was that Chart Busters fitted in best with this category of music and i thought it was the correct decision.

My Chosen Colour Scheme

At the start i had four colour schemes in mind that i thought would look good for a music magazine. These were as followed:

Black, yellow and green.
Red, white and blue.
Black and white.
Black, red and yellow.

The two that had the top votes were red, white and blue but also black and white. I went on to choose Red, white and blue because i thought it would look best for the music genre i am going to make my magazine. I did this because i was going to make it an RnB magazine and most magazines in this genre are colourful and not dull.

My Preliminary Coursework

This is my preliminary coursework. You can see my front cover and my contents page.

My Preliminary Work Analysis

For my preliminary coursework, we had to create a front page and a contents page for a school magazine. We started off by brainstorming for titles and ideas for stories within the magazine. We then drew sketches of what out front page and contents page could look like. This enabled us to gain ideas of what our magazine could look like and give us ideas for when it come to creating the front page and contents page. The last part of our preparing stage was to go out and take our photos. I went out and took multiple photos of lots of different things that I could put into my preliminary task. I also took a medium close up of one of my classmates to go on my front cover as my main story.
The sketching consisted of drawing two front pages and two contents pages I finished this for homework and then came up with a shot list for my photos. I then went around the school and took many pictures for my preliminary task. All of this gave me ideas of what my coursework would look like. I then uploaded the pictures I took onto Photoshop and started creating my front cover. We created our front cover first and then started creating our contents page.
I had a few problems when creating my preliminary coursework the biggest problem I had was that I wasn’t used to using Photoshop. I didn’t know what the icons meant or how to create my coursework. I overcome this by asking my teacher and he provided me with all the help I needed. Another problem I had was taking my front cover picture. I was taking the picture and the colour of the girls top was clashing with the background colour, this made it hard for me to cut her out using the lasso tool. I had to take this picture again but put my model on a darker background.
Overall, eventhough i had a few problems, i learnt alot and now have a wider understanding of taking photos, using photoshop and understanding music magazines. This was a poor atempt at my preliminary coursework but i understand what i have to do in the future for my main coursework peice.

My Sixth Picture

This photo was take by mistake but actually turned out to be quite effective for me. i intended it to be a double page photo but the image came out too small. This is the picture i am going to use for my front cover but i am going to crop it from her waist upwards. I am doing this because i like the pose and the facial expression of the model. Her necklace is also clearly on show and also her stomach creating my R&B mise-en-scene.

My Fifth Picture

This picture was intended for my double page spread. I believe this is a good picture due to the pose created and the eye contact with the model and the camera. This is one of my chosen pictures i am going to work on when producing my front cover.

My Fourth Picture

This picture was taken to try and create my front cover. I decided against this because the model was not making eye contact with the camera. This is important because with music magazine front covers, the model is always making eye contact. Another reason i didnt use this was because i didnt wat a long shot for my front cover.

My Third Picture

with this picture, my idea was to create the Lily Allen effect again but with a different background. The same clothing is used but this picture came out a tad blury and will not be included in my magazine. But again, i tried to create the sexy pose that you may see people such as Rihanna or Beyonce sreating.

My Second Picture

With this image, i tried to create the effect that Lily Allen createt in the NME magazine. My idea was to have my model on one side with the title accross her. Then the other side would have contained small images and the main body of text. But unfortunately, this come out blury as the camera used had'nt focused properly on the taking of the photo. This is why i have decided not to include this image within my magazine.

My First Picture

This was one of the pictures i have decides to use within my magazine. With this image i tried to create a low angle shot giving my model high authority. I also tried to produce a sexy sort of photo as used in many R & B magazines. I decides to make her wear clothing which matches my colour scheme and hi top trainers. I got this idea from the front cover i analysed with Dizzee Rascal wering the same sort of trainers. I also used the rugged jeans to fit my genre of music.

Audience Demographics

Demographics refer to the charactersitics of the human population and population segements, especially when used to identify consumer markets. Demographics regard socio-economic factors such as age, income, sex, occupation, education, etc. Audience demographics are a very important aspect of media planning in matching the media with the market as industries/companies often define their target market in terms of demographics. For companies, identifying the demographic groups that will be most interested in their product, can mean the difference between success and failure.

My Questionnaire Results

From looking at my poll/questionnaire i have based my magazine design on these answers. The first stage of my design is that its going to be aimed at the female audience as most people were female that took my poll.
My second question was on the age of the public. This came back to me as most people being the age of 16-25. For this reason, i will be aiming my magazine at this audience.
My next question was what is your favorite genre of music. This come back to me as R n B. For this reason, my magazine will be based around an R n B genre. It will be similar to Vibe Magazine.
The fourth question was how do you listen to your music. This come back as most people listen to their music on an mp3 player (ipod). This is why there is going to be a competition to win an ipod on the front cover and the contents page. This also links with the last question as the public said they would be more likely to buy a magazine if it had a competition within it.
My magazine colour scheme will be red, white and blue. This is due to my fifth question being what colour scheme do you think will look best. The public replied to this and let me know that this would be their favourite colour scheme.
I had four titles that i was going to call the magazine but the public have voted that the one they think sounds best is 'chart busters.' This is the reason why my magazine is going to be called this.
My voters also thought that images attracts them most to a music magazine. This is why im putting a large image on my front cover (one that stands out) and several in my contents and double page spread. My magazine will also be priced between £2.01-£3 because this is what most voters didnt mind paying for a music magazine. This will also be released monthly as the poll shows this is when most people buy their music magazines.
The above choices have been made from the results of my questionnaire. I am making these decisions because i beleive it will attract a large percentage of potential buyers.

The Maslow's Hierarchy

Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs is a psychological theory proposed by Abraham Maslow in 1943. The hierarchy illustrates what humans need in order to survive but also be happy. It develops in stages from basic necessities that are essential to things that complete us as people. these stages are; Psychological, Safety, Love/Belonging, Esteem, Self-Actualization. Using this heiracrchy i will analyse how media products are mareted in order to make the consumer feel like they are essential needs rather than luxurious wants.
This is a double page spread from an NME magazine. Stragight away, we see that the magazine has continued their colour scheme throughout the magazine and onto this double page spread. The design here creates a messy mise-en-scene. we get this feel from the shirt undone and the title made from seperate letters stuck together. i believe that this is promoting the story as Lily Allen is a singer that is always found messing around by the press.
We get one image here and this is of Lily Allen taking up half of the page. this immediately shows us who is the status character is of the story. Lily also has a jokey pose and black hair and make up to fit the colour scheme. The language also fits Lily as its is a title with humour about it and her telling her thoughts.
Overall, this double page spread is very effective. The colour scheme is professional and the mise-en-scene created fits Lily Allen very well.
This double page spread is from metal hammer magazine (a rock magazine). Instantly we get the rock image from the colour scheme of black and white. these are the sterotypical rock colours. But unlike the front page, we have no yellow colour as the front page colour scheme has.
We get a gothic design as we distinguish it by the patters and shapes used within the double page spread. this design also gives out a scary feel to the spread. The image is of a man dressed in dark clothing giving off a suspicious/evil look to the readers giving them direct eye contact. his pose and his hair also give off a rock feeling from the dark clothing and yet again, the evil look.
The words on this cover are used in a way that promotes the rock genre by the fonts and they are placed in a way where no important information is covered. The language has also got the rock/violent feel to it by some of the words being impact and explode.
Overall, this is a good example of a rock magazine spread. the colour, text and images all combine to make a dark and very sterotypical rock story.
This is a double page spread from Q magazine. The colour scheme is the same as the fromt cover (red, white and black). So by the colour scheme, we can tell that they are sticking to the professional look creating this spead in a tidy way. On the left side, we have a big picture with the title over the top. then we get another picture at the bottom of a mans head. The pictures and words fit together in a tidy way also showing the professionalism.
The band that this spread is based on have dark clothing and two of them have long hair. this creates a feeling of rock or a slightly indie form of band.
The words used on this spread are used in an effictive and tidy way. they dont cover and important parts of the magazine and they clearly state their purpose. there is also red text used within black text to section out important parts of information. The language used is also simple and professional. "born to run" is the title of this double page spread, this shows the simplicity of three short words. Overall i believe that this is a good double page spread created by Q magazine. They stick with their colour scheme and make it simple for their audience to understand what is going on.

The colour scheme used on this contents page is black, white and red. It has the same colour scheme as the Q magazine I analyzed. The red used is associated with anger, love and embarrassment. The red used may be linked to Oasis's anger and embarrassment of being thrown off their world tour.
The design used for this contents page has good and bad points. We get good colour contrast as the white stands out on the black banner heading but down the left hand side, the band index looks messy. The images are also fitted on the page well and dont look messy. The professional look of this magazine is due to the company aiming their editions at serious music lovers.
There are three images used on this contents page, two of Oasis and one on a subscription offer of the business. The Oasis pictures clearly show the readers that they are the main story within the magazine. The pictures show them playing music and the story is them being kicked off their world tour. I believe these are good images to use for this story as this is what they wont be doing. Whereas, the subscription image shows what products are on offer giving the reader good information.
The poses and hair styles in the images have something behind them. The poses of the Oasis brothers show that the story is related to their music. This is true as the story is of them is about them being banned from their tour. The poses are of them playing their instruments and singing which they wont be doing at their tour. Their hair styles also show their target audience. Their hair is quite long and the guitar shows they are rock/indie performers.
The words used on this contents page are clear and are in a professional font. It shows that the stories inside are serious and have no joke sense about them. The words used and the bold titles make it easy to figure its the contents page. Some of the text can also be read from a distance as the important parts are in a large font.
Overall i believe this is a good contents page but it can be improved. I think most of the information is clear and easy to understand but the strip on the left hand side is messy and lets the contents page down.

The main colors used on this contents page are black, yellow and white. Due to the black it shows a boyish magazine it also puts across an image of anger. This shows us the target audience they are aiming for are young men in their teens.
The words and images fit together in a tidy way. This makes it clear for the readers to distinguish what stories go with the designated images. Bold fonts have been used in this contents page and this also suggests anger as it is a rock magazine.
There are many images used on this contents page. This shows that there are many inside stories. The images show us tattoos and dark clothing to promote the rock image of the magazine.
The poses shown and the hair styles promote the rock image even further due to long hair, with a medium shot of a rock artist performing on stage, this gives an indication once again of what's going to be inside.
There is a banner heading show on the top with a clear and bold title,  this makes it stand out to readers and to clearly state that it is the contents page. This clear heading makes it easier for readers to identify. The colours of the font make it stand out and attract readers from a distance. All the points i have explained above are all made to attract the rock music target audience.
The language used on this contents page is short and snappy.  This shows that it is not a serious magazine, and it wants the readers to get straight to the point of what is going to be inside the magazine.
The overall impression shown on the contents page of this magazine, indicates the main type of music being rock, with bold fonts and bright colours which stand out to appeal to the target audience all together. This magazine is aimed at young adults who are interested in rock music. The types of readers that are not addressed by this contents page and magazine are young girls or young teenagers who are interested in pop music for example.

The colors used on this contents page are the same as the front cover. It uses the same black, red and white color scheme which makes it look professional and tidy.
The words and images are kept to themselves in this contents page. this proves the magazine has a serious design. It also has a serious font within the contents page and throughout the magazine which also shows a positive representation to their target audience (older, more serious people).
There are two images used in this contents page. There is one of a boy group and one of a male on his own. The image of the band is serious and draws us away from the color scheme due to the green grass. The other image also shows us a purple suit, again taking us away from the color scheme. This technique is used to draw us away from the contents page and towards the images. The band also have a cool pose with long hair representing a trendy band such as (the kooks).
Two banner headings are used on this contents page with the title of the magazine and the heading appropriate. One banner heading clearly shows that its the contents page, while the other says 'review.' This shows an inside story. The banner heading makes it obvious for readers that they are looking at the contents page.
The language used on this contents page is very 'up front' and addresses the reader of the main parts straight away. All headings are on a different color background to make words stand out. An example of this is in the top banner heading where contents is written in a white font on a black background. The language used on this contents page is short, in depth but still has enough information on the inside story.
My overall impression on this contents page is a positive one. It gives a good indication of what is inside and clearly shows that it is an up market magazine with serious wording and images. The younger audience will not be addressed by this due to the language used and the bands featured.

The three main colours used on this front page are red, black and white. By sticking to a few colours, the magazine looks professional and tidy. There are also some bright colours involved which may relate to teenagers. The masthead is in a bold red colour. This magazine creates a positive mood with the vibrant colour.
The design of this magazine consists of one image and lots of writing. The image take up a lot of the page and is of Dizzee Rascal. Whereas, the fonts are bold and stick to the colour scheme of the front page. The clothing of the celebrity also fits with the colours which make the mise-en-scene of the magazine, positive.
The only image used on this magazive is of Dizzee Rascal. It takes up most of the page and he looks crazy. This was the time when he was promoting his single 'Bonkers.' this is why NME may have chose this pose for the front cover. By looking at the image, we understand that the magazine is aimed at teenage boys and men. The reason for this is that Dizzee Rascal is a rapper and mainly boys are into this genre of music.
The pose used in this image is of a black rapper with his arms out wide looking like he is going to give someone a hug. He is wearing jeans, a vest and hi top trainers. this promotes his image as a rapper. He also has short crew cut hairstyle.
The words on the front cover are big and bold. This immediately draws the potential buyers attention to the magazine. The cover lines also provide information towards the reader about what is inside the magazine. Some of the writing is large to stand out, whereas the other bits are smaller and are made so the reader can read them when he/she is up close.
The language used on this front cover is short and simple. It is made this way so the readers can understand about what's inside and get straight into the action. There is few words on the front cover but they fully describe the content of the magazine.
My overall impression of this magazine is a positive one. It gave me a good indication to what would have been inside. It also gave a clear understanding of who its main audience were. The company also used celebrity endorsement to appeal even more to its main audience. The female audience was not particularly reached with this magazine but this is not a matter.
The colors chosen for this front cover gives it an angry attraction for people into the rock genre. There is fire, it is dark and almost looks like a war scene.
The front cover is designed with bold capital letters that goes with the loud genre of the music. The image is strong which represents anger and the same sort of stuff we would link to this magazine followers.
The images on this front cover instantly shows that it is a rock magazine. This is done by the use of the electric guitar and the fire. A band is also present with dark clothing, again representing a rock group.
The pose, hair and make up on this front cover gives us a strong rock mise-en-scene. The hair styles are long and their poses show that they have high authority.
The wording on this front cover is used in a weird way. This front cover dose not look like a music magazine. Capital letters are used and these letters are linked with anger and aimed at boys. This lettering also makes the magazine stand out to buyers.
There is not mush language used on this magazine front cover. We get a few words of bands that are featured within the magazine and a block of writing across the bottom which says "alice in chains."
My overall impression of this front cover is that it is a positive attempt of attracting their male rocker audience. There is a downside to this because they are not appealing to the female audience at all.

Q Magazine, represents all types of music but the reviews are serious. The masthead portrays this by the use of a posh and stylish font. It is also a white Q on a red background to stand out. This gives off a slick and stylish impression to the readers. The masthead also covers a large section of the front page. The reason for this maybe to stand out to customers.
The design of this magazines is also professional as you have Cheryl Cole creating a sexy image with writing on either side of her head. There is also a section of writing across her chest that is promoting her new single in the charts. The design of the writing on the front cover is in capitals and is also sticking to the colour scheme. this shows importance or big news.
There is only one image used on this front cover. Cheryl Cole's make up sticks with the colour scheme. Here, Q Magazine have used celebrity endorsement by hiring Cheryl. The image also shows that the magazine is aimed at a male audience and it has a high level of profession.
The pose, style, hair and make up of this front cover resembles Cheryl Cole as her new professional career. After splitting with girls aloud, she is showing her dominance as a single singer with a sexy pose. her pose also creates an image of her age being young.
The words on the cover are used in capital letter which lets off a professional and important impression. The names of several other singers are written beside Cheryl which tells the reader that their stories are inside. A skyline is also used by saying "the UK's biggest music magazine." This puts a positive impression to the customers.
The language used on the front cover of this edition of the Q Magazine is short and simple. this may give the readers an impression of hurry to open the magazine and look inside.
My overall impression of this magazine is that it could be mistaken for a different type of magazine due to the picture. However, the bands inside make it a good magazine due to the number of well known artists featuring inside it. I think that the target audience is the younger males and it is a very serious magazine.
This front cover replicates the opening scene from sin city. This film had a gothic genre, and this front cover uses the rain plus the colours to try and copy this type of genre.
